College life can be very exciting and challenging at the same time for many young people. Arriving at your educational institution, you may expect to meet interesting people with common ideas and interests to spend time with and enjoy student life together. You may also feel very excited about the classes and look forward to attending them eagerly, prepared to gain valuable knowledge relevant to your future career. However, being a first-year student can bring many surprises. And it’s not only a wonderful time when you can take advantage of your youth and have an entirely pleasant life, having plenty of opportunities to communicate and immerse yourself in active social events. Some young learners who neglect their well-balanced lifestyle with good sleep and a nutritious diet are exposed to various health problems at a very young age. Here, you will find the seven most typical health issues faced by most students and the ways to deal with them.

We all understand that the purpose of going to college is to study and learn. It’s also very important to learn how to live a life through various experiences and challenges outside the classroom. And, of course, it requires effort and diligence to wake up early in the mornings and work hard till late, coping with the complex subjects and implementing an overwhelming amount of homework assigned by teachers. Thus, going through a lot of stress and tensions, students tend to become vulnerable to various diseases and some health issues, which must be treated as soon as they get noticeable to prevent serious complications in the future. However, some subtle symptoms regarding mental health can only be noticed at a very close observation. Some mental health problems such as anxiety and depression or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can even impede your academic performance if you don’t give due attention to it in time or decide to postpone the treatment. Thus, it will be significant to take some caring measures once you identify one of the problems. You can either turn to your college counselor for help or get treatment from your doctor.

    2. Mumps

Higher education, with all its stress, can add more health problems to your life. One of the most widespread illnesses among students is mumps. The comeback chances of getting such a disease are very high, even if you have already had it in your childhood. The outbreaks happen to repeat regularly across college campuses. Thus, it would help if you were very careful with contacting large groups of people to prevent this hardship from your life. Getting vaccinated would also be a reasonable option to consider if you haven’t done it before to lower the risks of catching it from your peers.

    3. Pollen Allergy

Pollen allergy is considered one of the most common allergies in the world. Young people tend to suffer from it as often as adults. Thus, a seasonal allergy can be as unpleasant as any other fever. Even in winter, you can get hay fever, which causes uncomfortable feelings such as runny nose, itchy eyes, ears, and mouth, and many other discomforts. Start allergy treatment before pollen season begins to avoid swelling around some parts of the body and red, watery eyes.

    4. Stomach Flu

Gastroenteritis is a typical illness that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and belly cramps. These bad feelings usually last several days until the general condition improves. However, don’t neglect treatment if you caught the virus and begin to feel one of the symptoms listed above. And always remember about hygiene, as stomach flu can easily spread through objects we use daily, such as phones, door handles, etc.

    5. Eating Disorders

Most eating disorders begin at a very young age when people don’t follow a healthy lifestyle or don’t pay attention to a balanced diet. Thus, adding the stress and pressure from studying, young learners tend to consume bad food excessively or not eat at all, which leads to anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. If you notice any of these problems in your life, consult a professional to get proper treatment.

    6. Meningitis

Anyone in college can get a bacterial or viral infection, which may cause meningitis. You can distinguish the problem quickly, as the symptoms resemble the flu, which means high temperature, headaches, and fatigue. However, when you start the treatment, ensure you don’t react to certain medications to receive an effective cure for the disease.

    7. Mononucleosis

Mono is a common viral infection that causes a sore throat, swollen glands, and fever. In most cases, young people who get infected feel so worn out that they can hardly move. Living in close quarters makes it easier for the disease to spread. So, if you happen to catch one in your dorm, try to isolate yourself until you get better to prevent your friends from being ill. And, of course, the right medicine prescribed by the doctor will help you manage the problem fast.
